Author and scholar Robert Thurman, who studied with the 14th Dalai Lama, became the first American Buddhist monk of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition (1964), and co-founded (with actor Richard Gere and composer Philip Glass) Tibet House (1987), a non-profit organization that helps preserve Tibetan culture. As a Columbia University professor, Thurman holds the first endowed university chair in the field of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist Studies in the United States. In 1997, Time Magazine named Thurman one of the 25 Most Influential Americans.

Michael Bernard Beckwith, Michael Bernard Beckwith is the founder of the Agape International Spiritual Center, a trans-denominational community of some 9,000 members devoted to the study and practice of New Thought–Ancient Wisdom. Agape's outreach programs feed homeless populations, serve the incarcerated and their families, advocate for environmental resource preservation, and globally build and support orphanages whose children have survived the ravages of war and AIDS. Beckwith — featured in the international hit book and DVD “The Secret” — has written numerous, award-winning books and is a frequent guest on such national programs as Larry King Live (CNN), and The Oprah Winfrey Show.
